Melanie Judge is a queer and feminist activist and scholar, and holds a PhD in Women’s and Gender Studies. She is adjunct associate professor in public law at the University of Cape Town. Melanie is author of Blackwashing Homophobia: Violence and the Politics of Gender, Sexuality and Race (Routledge, 2018) and lead editor of To Have and To Hold: The Making of Same-sex Marriage in South Africa (Fanele, 2008). As a prominent activist for queer rights, Melanie has been extensively involved in litigation, advocacy, research and public analysis in the field. Melanie is a trustee of the GALA archive and the 2016 recipient of the Psychology and Social Change award, from the University Currently Known as Rhodes, in recognition of her activism and scholarship on sexuality.
