Vanya Gastrow is a lawyer and research consultant based in Cape Town, South Africa. She holds a PhD in migration studies. Her work has covered shopkeepers’ experiences of crime and xenophobia the country, their ability to accesses formal and informal justice systems, the regulation of their businesses, and their role in local economies. As part of a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Department of Public Law at the University of Cape Town, she wrote Citizen and Pariah, a book that engages first hand small traders and the Somali communities in Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein and Philippi.
