Shawn Buck moved to Cape Town 12 years ago from America to work in South Africa’s social impact sector. While working as a nonprofit consultant during the day, he started the Cape Town chapter of Silent Book Club (SBC) in 2024. SBC is a global BYOB (Bring Your Own Book) gathering where attendees read alone but together in public spaces, and then socialize afterward. Cape Town SBC is now the second largest chapter in the world and meets 3 times a month in parks, cafes, breweries, and even on the train, averaging about 150 readers per gathering. Shawn enjoys listening to audiobooks on long walks, sneaking in a guilty-pleasure action thriller, and exploring new and exciting places for readers to gather around Cape Town.
