Pieter Odendaal

Pieter Odendaal is a poet, playwright, translator and editor. His debut collection, asof geen berge ooit hier gewoon het nie (Tafelberg), received the 2019 Ingrid Jonker Prize. His poems have appeared in various local and international journals and he has performed throughout South Africa, in the Netherlands, Nigeria, England, Peru and Ecuador. He was the executive director of InZync Poetry from 2015-2019. Along with Annel Pieterse and Mbongeni Nomkonwana, he is the co-editor of the translation anthologies Many Tongues (2013) and ConVerse (2018). Odendaal holds a PhD in Creative Writing from the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane (2020) and currently teaches Creative Writing at North-West University in Potchefstroom. His play Droomwerk received the 2021 ATKV Woordveertjie for best new drama script and made its debut at the National Arts Festival in 2023. He is the translator of Gonçalo M. Tavares’ Portuguese novel Jerusalem into Afrikaans (Minimal Press). Odendaal’s second poetry collection, Ontaard, appeared at Tafelberg in 2023.
