Debbie Loots het in die beeldende kunste studeer aan Unisa, en het in die tagtigs en vroeë negentigs vir verskeie koerante geskryf in Gauteng. In 2010 het sy haar honneursgraad in skone kunste aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad se Michaelis School behaal. Sy het onlangs haar meestersgraad in skeppende skryfkunde aan die UK voltooi.
Debbie bly in Kaapstad, waar sy tot onlangs VISI-tydskrif se artikelskrywer was, en nou vryskutwerk doen vir onder andere Mail & Guardian, Rapport, Sunday Times en die Cape Argus, asook die tydskrifte VISI en Weg! Platteland. Split is haar debuutroman en spruit uit haar MA-kursus.

Now she freelances for among others Mail & Guardian, Rapport, Sunday Times and the Cape Argus, and the magazines VISI and Weg! Platteland. Split is her debut novel, resulting from her master’s degree.
