David Smuts was a human rights lawyer and activist in Namibia for decades, including during the most turbulent times. He was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2015. He recently attended a Rockelfeller writing residency in Bellagio where he wrote part of his book, Death, Detention and Disappearance.
