Thabang Ignitius Rampai is a naturally talented South African artist born on the 26th of
September 1987. He discovered his Gift for drawing at a very young age without any
formal training.
During his High school years, Thabang received a number of awards for the best art
learner and after matric he went on to study Fine-art and graduated. To add on to his
painting and drawing skills, Thabang went on to study animation and fulfilled his love for
comic book illustration. His approach to art is social commentary which he researched
during his University years and then adopted through his art journey.
Thabang organized and held his first solo Exhibition at the Sasolburg public library.
2016, Thabang has also exhibited numerous times at exhibitions organized by African
Fashion Alive.
March 2018, Thabang was one of the 40 emerging creative nominated to exhibit at the
Design Indaba Festival and a week after the Festival, Thabang was invited by African
Fashion Alive (A.F.A) to exhibit at the A.F.A Gala dinner held at Braamfontein,
Johannesburg which was part of the buildup event towards the main Exhibition that was
to take place at USA, which Thabang was part of.
Thabang’s work reflects on issues affecting society at large. What motivates him to
produce artworks that speak for themselves is the harsh background in which he was
brought up. He saw the theme as a chance to comment on topics such as: crime; rape;
drugs; gangsters etc. his visual interpretation of social reality has intrigued many
audiences whom have seen his work. Thabang’s goal, with the theme, is to help bring
change in every township in South Africa.
