Born in Liberia in 1979, Golakai moved around extensively with her family due to political and economic unrest. She lived in Togo, Ghana and Zimbabwe before coming to Cape Town as a student in 2003. She trained and worked as a medical researcher in immunology. Her writing owes a lot to her experiences as a refugee, foreigner, scientist and contemporary African nomad. Golakai will be launching The Lazarus Effect at Open Book.
