André Trantraal

André Trantraal is a writer, illustrator and translator. He grew up in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town. Much of his work is written in Kaaps and he is a pioneer in recording – through children’s books, comic books, newspaper cartoons and translation – this particular language.

He was awarded an Afrikaanse Taal-en Kultuurvereniging (ATKV) Woordveertjie as well as the South African Literary Award (SALA) for his children’s book, Keegan en Samier: Die Sokker-fiasko in 2021. He was shortlisted, in the same year, for a University of Johannesburg (UJ) Prize for translation. He was nominated for his Kaaps translation of American author Jason Reynolds’ middle grade novel, Ghost. In 2022 he was declared a joint winner of the SALA award for his children’s book, Keegan en Samier: Die Strokiesprent-kompetisie.
